Free and open source media server

Your movies, shows and music.
Your own home cinema.

Matinee turns the folders on your server into a beautiful library for the whole household. Point it at your files and it does the rest: artwork and details, smooth playback on every screen, and a place for everyone to pick up where they left off. No ads, and no account on someone else's server.

1

Install it

One Docker command, a package for Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora or Homebrew, or a Helm chart.

2

Point it at your folders

Movies, TV and music. Matinee names everything from your file and folder names.

3

Press play

Artwork and details fill themselves in, new files appear in seconds, and every screen in the house can watch.

Plays anything, anywhere

Files a device can play stream exactly as they are, with instant seeking. Everything else is converted on the fly, on your GPU if you have one. Subtitles, resume points and the next episode are all handled for you.

Find the right thing in seconds

Filter any library by genre, decade, rating, runtime, cast, studio, 4K or Dolby Atmos. Search as you type across movies, shows and music. Save a set of filters as a smart collection that keeps itself up to date.

Everyone gets their own

Accounts for the whole household, profiles with "Who's watching?", and kids profiles that only see what's rated for them. Each person keeps their own progress, watch list and theme.

Every title, beautifully presented

Posters, backdrops, descriptions, cast and crew, awards, trailers and box sets are filled in for you. Your own artwork always wins.

Collections that build themselves

Smart collections like "Unwatched 80s action" or "Short enough for tonight", hand-picked lists, and box sets, each one pinnable to Home.

Knows what's in every file

Matinee quietly reads every file for resolution, HDR and Dolby Vision, codecs, audio channels and languages, then shows the essentials as badges and filters.

Your music, too

Artists and albums with covers and photos, read from your tags, and a player that keeps going while you browse.

Make it yours

Seven themes built in, from cinema dark to drive-in, and each person picks their own. The phone and TV apps follow along.

On the couch and on the go

The Matinee apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, Apple TV and Google TV find your server on their own, play files with the device's own player, and download for offline viewing with progress that syncs back.

The apps are a one-time purchase. The server stays free and open source, and buying an app is how the project is funded.
