Matinee v0.1.0

The first public release of Matinee: a fast, self-hosted media server for your movies, TV and music. Point it at your folders and it does the rest: tidy libraries, artwork and details, and smooth playback on any screen. No ads, and no account on someone else’s server.

Matinee is early. The server and web player are ready for everyday use at home; the phone and TV apps are in testing and will follow.

Highlights

  • Libraries for movies, TV and music, named from your file and folder names, with posters, descriptions, cast and crew, awards, trailers and related titles from TMDB (bring your own free key) or your own artwork files.
  • Plays anywhere. Files the browser can play stream as they are; everything else is converted on the fly to HLS with FFmpeg, on the GPU when there is one (AMD and Intel through VA-API, NVIDIA NVENC, Intel Quick Sync, or VideoToolbox on a Mac).
  • Subtitles from the file or from files next to it, with picture subtitles burned in when needed.
  • New files show up in seconds: Matinee watches local disks and checks network shares cheaply every 30 seconds.
  • Knows what’s in every file: resolution, HDR and Dolby Vision, codecs, audio channels, Atmos and languages, shown as badges and usable as filters.
  • Find anything: search as you type, and filter and sort libraries by any detail.
  • Collections: smart collections built from rules, hand-picked ones, box sets from TMDB, and pinned rows on Home.
  • People, profiles and kids mode: accounts for everyone, profiles with optional PINs, and kids profiles that only see titles rated for them.
  • Picks up where you left off, with a watch list, Continue watching and Recently added for each person.
  • Seven themes and support for your own.
  • Easy to reach: devices on your home network can watch without signing in, apps find the server by themselves, and remote access works without touching your router.
  • Radarr and Sonarr (optional): requests, coming soon, problem reports and quality changes.
  • Offline downloads prepared on the server for the upcoming apps.

Install Matinee with one of the options below, open http://<your server>:7171, create the admin account, and add your media folders under Settings. The README walks through each install method, the TMDB key, hardware transcoding and remote access.
